It has been known for a long time that the most important meal of the day is breakfast, but it’s the most skipped meal of the day.
All you hear is I’m too busy or I’m so late. Did you know that whenever you skip breakfast, you are telling your body “I want to get fat” it’s as simple as that. Eating breakfast is everybody’s nutritional priority.
Many studies have concluded that breakfast eaters are less likely to be overweight, and eating a healthy breakfast rather than pastry, is the key.
If you have a high fiber cereal for your morning meal rather than a ham and three cheese omelet or even skipping the meal altogether you are off to a better day already. So if you are running late at least have fruits like apples, bananas and grapes.
Another thing to keep in mind is that low calorie breakfast foods seem to lead to better food choices for the rest of the day. This in may help people to control their weight better.
Many people tend to think they are saving time by skipping breakfast. Some think avoiding breakfast would be a good way to reduce calories because they are usually not hungry in the morning but this sets a very bad precedence for your day with negative consequences for your metabolism.
Breakfast got it’s name because it breaks the fast that you went through while you slept. If you skip the first meal of the day, your body gets the message that you are still fasting which slows down your metabolic rate and this is the beginning of a metabolic downward spiral.
Without breakfast, you will start your days activity with very low blood sugar meaning you will be lethargic, have less energy, and will be very hungry. This leads to overeating at the next meal or reaching for an unhealthy mid morning snack, like a candy bar, in order to get extra energy. The other effect is it also makes you eat more during lunch or dinner.
Replace the junk food with natural foods such as fruits are some of the best foods you can have for breakfast. I also try to choose foods that have some protein, good carbohydrates and healthy fats for my first meal of the day.
I have tried Lean Body Instant Breakfast Shakes They are quick, convenient whole-food breakfast solutions when I was in a hurry. They had enough whole food nutrition to keep me going and tasted pretty good also. I also grab a banana or an apple and that beats skipping breakfast.
The American Heart Association recommended a supplement that I am behind 100%.
It’s important that healthy people get adequate nutrients by eating a variety of foods in moderation. In addition to an 81Mg Aspirin, one supplement that I have been taking is for omega-3 fatty acid.
As someone who has had multiple bypass surgery, I am convinced that I can lower my probability of more cardiovascular disease and/or lower my risk factors by taking vitamin or mineral supplements.
I know that eating more fish has been associated with decreased risk of heart disease. The American Heart Association recommends that patients without documented heart disease eat a variety of fish, that contain omega 3, at least twice a week. Examples of these types of fish include salmon, herring and trout.
Those with documented heart disease should consume about 1 gram of omega-3 fatty acids, preferably from fish, but my doctor said supplements could also be considered.
Since my triglycerides, or blood fats were on the high side I take 2 or 3 capsules of fish oil a day. I read that the Japanese average of over 3000 mg of fish oil per day, and their incidence of heart problems is way lower than the rest of the world.
Since I am not overly fond of herring and I can’t always get salmon or trout, I rely on supplementation to keep my heart healthy.
Because I am also on a tighter budget these days I found an online store that has a coupon deal. If you go here you can get 5% off your order when you check out by entering the code vip5off.
Vitamin E is not to be avoided but appreciated for promoting health. If you eat sufficient vegetable oils, nuts, green leafy vegetables, and fortified cereals, you probably have enough vitamin E. but the average American is well below recommended amounts, which means we might need a supplement.
Vitamin E is a fat-soluble vitamin. The current recommendations by the Institute of Medicine (IOM) for vitamin E range from 9-300 IU per day for children 1-3 years of age and 28.5-1,500 IU per day for lactating mothers.
The vast majority of published reports show the benefits of vitamin E in using free radicals and helping control inflammation which cuts down chronic diseases.
Other research has been released cautioning the dangers of vitamin E. In 2005 a review of 19 states found that 400 IU per day of vitamin E increased the risk of dying of any cause. They were small samples, but one with a large target population (nearly 21,000), concluded “no significant differences in all-cause mortalityâ€.
The 2005 study also neglected to publish 12 excluded studies in which fewer than 10 patients died, which made the results less reliable. Even the researchers concluded that they could not evaluate the findings to healthy adult populations but only those who were already sick when the supplementation was done.
What was not well known at the time was a study showing up to 1,600 IU of vitamin E per day to be safe and other research showing women with the highest vitamin E intakes had a 30-40% lower incidence of heart disease than those with the lowest vitamin E intakes.
Bad news always seems to get more attention.
More recently in 2007, a classic example of conflicting data was one study finding vitamin E to be protective against prostate cancer and another finding no benefit. Further analysis of the studies shows that the one with a protective benefit was far more rigorous than the other study. It lasted over 5 years, giving more reliable results.
Other research has backed up the protective vitamin E study by finding a 32% reduction in prostate cancer risk with vitamin E supplements.
Many times when thinking of dietary or nutritional supplements, we assume if one is recommended, two must be better, and then take four just for good measure.
The secret to being healthy is to use the optimal quantity over time. This is difficult to gauge sometimes because the optimal dose for the majority of dietary supplements have not been defined, but research in this area is growing.
So is vitamin E safe? Yes.
How much should you take?
If we are in good health and eat all our veggies, nuts, and seeds, we may not even need to use vitamin E supplements. But if you decide to use them you can go here to get them cheaper.
Watch a short video about vitamin E, as we get older. Click here to see it.
We hear a lot about proper nutrition, weight loss and exercise in taking care of ourselves if we have diabetes. But did you know your mouth can get you in trouble just as easy, if you don’t also take care of your oral hygiene?
It seems that gum disease and diabetes do not play well together. A study in the Journal of Periodontology found that poorly controlled type 2 diabetic patients are more likely to develop periodontal disease than well-controlled diabetics are.
If your sugars are high they permit germs to grow in your mouth, and this can lead to gum disease. If your gums get inflamed that can lead to insulin resistance, which in turn makes your blood sugar levels go high. The bottom line is that this trend needs to be stopped if you want to stay healthy.
So what we need to keep an eye on is any bleeding when you brush or floss, your teeth may seem longer or the roots may be exposed if you have receding gums. Another sign of infection is pus between the teeth and gums, or you may have loose teeth or cavities.
If you already have gum disease, treatment with antibiotics can help reduce inflammation and lower blood sugar levels.
A little care goes a long way to help prevent or reduce the risks of gum disease. If you have any symptoms get to a dentist, and have regular exams every six months or so.
Brush and floss every day to remove bacteria and plaque from the hard to reach places between teeth and below the gumline. You might also consider a vitamin C supplement with antioxidants to help the immune system fight off infections and promote health.
As always work with your physician to keep your blood sugar under control.
The human body is not really that efficient in dealing with worms parasites if or when they get into our system, but there are healthy ways to rejuvenate the digestive tract. There are four ways that unwanted invaders can get in: Our food, water, the air we breathe, and our contact with the world around us.
In the U.S., the foods (mainly meat) and beverages are mainly responsible. With so much demand for fast food, meat inspections are not always done as often as they should. There are expert estimates that staff shortages contribute to only a fraction of all commercial meat throughout North America to be inspected properly.
Testing is done by looking at the meat but many species of worms, as well as their eggs, cannot yet be seen by the naked eye. Worms and parasites can also travel through tainted fruits and vegetables, and unclean drinking water, to name a few sources.
Consider that worms can also enter the body through insects like infected mosquitoes, fleas, and houseflies. In some isolated cases contaminated dust, walking barefoot outdoors, international travel, or through sexual contact are sources of trouble.
If you like your meat rare or raw, some things to watch for are occasional gas, bloating, fatigue, and light stomach discomfort. We learned in school that worms can grow and thrive inside our intestines, and may interfere affect the body’s digestive system. These intruders love to eat and the downside is they do it by eating our meal before we have had a chance to absorb the nutrients. Long term this leads to malnutrition, fatigue, and immune system problems. At their worst, worms can grow over time and cause blockages within the intestines.
All this sounds alarming but there is a real simple solution to the problem. There are ways to make your cleanse the lower digestive system so they cannot survive.
Anti-parasitic natural compounds include Green Black Walnut hulls, Wormwood extract, and Clove buds are just a few. Inside the digestive tract, these compounds work together to discourage the survival and reproductive abilities of many common worms and parasites. When taking these compounds, it is useful to also help replenish the body’s flora population with a fresh supply of beneficial bacteria.
Taking supplements of Probiotics (Acidophilus, Bifidus, etc) can cleanse the body of unwanted parasites but also lowers some of the body’s beneficial flora in the process. This is not all bad, especially if you are also trying to lose weight.
Use a colon cleanser in conjunction with Acai Berry which is known for it’s weight loss properties and natural antioxidants, to help your body function better, process food easier, and burn fat more efficiently. You’ve seen a more expensive version of this on Oprah.
Once the harmful bacteria is eliminated, the digestive tract is essentially given a fresh start. Fructooligosaccharides, or FOS, is a type of specialized carbohydrate that has been shown in numerous studies to encourage the growth and activity of friendly probiotic bacteria.
The percentage of Americans aged 20 and older who are overweight or obese is 66.3 percent. This is roughly 132 million adults who weigh too much.
Obesity drugs are certainly not a viable solution, despite the fact that a recently released report, the Booming Global Obesity Drug Market, says that Americans spend billions each year on weight-loss drugs, medications which have serious (and embarrassing) side effects and are for the most part are ineffective.
The report estimates that globally, by 2012, more than two billion people will be overweight and 600 million will be obese.†Wired magazine writes that, “The FDA is under public pressure to slow down its drug approval process and ensure that new drugs are safeâ€.
What the world needs is an appropriate, and responsible, solution to the problem. That will require lifestyle changes in what we eat and how much exercise we get.
As part of an overall lifestyle approach to achieve our body-weight goals, it makes sense to choose foods, drinks and dietary supplements that promote healthy weight, safely curb hunger and increase satiety (feeling “fullâ€).
According to Steve Mister of the Council for Responsible Nutrition (CRN), “There is a legitimate role for dietary supplements as part of an overall weight-loss management program.†Mister added that, “Consumers [must] understand [however] that these products need to be incorporated into a wellness regimen in combination with [a] healthy diet and regular exercise.â€
On the negative side, the weight-loss category has attracted a few unethical companies that see this market as a lucrative opportunity. These fringe feeders prey on the hopes and dreams of unsuspecting consumers who, in many cases, sought a “magic pill†solution to their weight loss problems.
All in all, the Federal government’s offensive against questionable weight-loss products, claims and companies is good (to weed out cowboy marketers and irresponsible claims), but this attention could be bad if consumers are shunted over to side-effect-ridden OTC and prescription weight-loss products and away from high-quality nutritional supplements, including those that help people achieve their weight-management goals as part of an overall lifestyle approach, such as 7-KETO® and other promising nutrients.
So, if a late-night-only weight-loss infomercial sounds too good to be true, it probably is. Stick to legitimate, high-quality products from trusted manufacturers that are available in your local health-food store.
Sixty-five percent of older adults in the United States have high blood pressure (above 140/90 mm Hg.) The treatment of high blood pressure is more than $24 billion each year, and affects the cost of healthcare for us all. This condition has grown to almost epidemic proportions all over the globe and disables many people every year.
There are things we can do to reduce our risks over the long term such as keeping our weight down, and eating a nutritional diet along with enough exercise.
Certain foods help maintain and control blood pressure like fiber, Fish Oil, soy foods & nuts. Now a new study printed online in the Nutrition Journal found that Vitamin C, known to help heart health in women and help stabilize heartbeats, may also help with blood pressure, even in healthy adults.
The researchers in this study looked at vitamin C blood levels and blood pressure in women 18-21 years of age with normal blood pressure over the course of 10 years. The women with Vitamin C levels in the top 25% were found to have lower systolic (top number) and diastolic (bottom number) than the lowest 25%. The actual differences were (112/69.8 vs 107.3/63.7 ).
These results led the authors of the study to suggest that Vitamin C “may be an important factor†in blood pressure regulation, even among healthy young adults.†In addition to the results from this recent study your immune system gets added support from Vitamin C, and Fish Oil is well known for its ability to help the heart and cardiovascular system.
Getting essential vitamins and minerals is important for a healthy diet. For many of us, our food choices do not always provide enough of the nutrients our bodies need, so adding dietary supplements into the daily routine has become a more popular way to get the nutrients our bodies need.

If you spend any time at all in the grocery store, chances are you’ll spend a lot of money. Food costs seem to be increasing al the time. In 2008 the Bureau of Labor Statistics said prices were 7.5% higher than in 2007. That was more than two times the rate of medical cost increases. Many couples spend between $150 and $200 per week at the Grocery Store.
Even though food costs more, you don’t have to sacrifice nutrition. Experts say there are plenty of low-cost highly nutritious foods, and a few you should put on your next grocery list.
The majority of us have been hit with the budget crunch when trying to balance the cost of food with all the other expenses.
Meals are now planned more carefully than in the past. We check for coupons in the neighborhood paper, flyers, and online looking for discounts and savings. Studies are showing many of us are buying less expensive processed foods in order to save a little money, but this can be unhealthy. Some alternative healthy foods have been identified by scientists and dietitians that can help in balancing our diet as well as the budget.
First consider the tomato. They are low cost all year round and you don’t have to grow them yourself. They are already in the can with extra herbs and spices built in. Researchers at Ohio State have determined that cooking tomatoes concentrates their power to fight diseases like cancer. The lycopene found in tomatoes is a powerful antioxidant, so tomato soup, pastes, or spaghetti sauces are a cheap healthy idea.
Because meat is so expensive we can supplement the tomatoes with beans. They are a great source of protein and much cheaper than steak which is one of the most expensive foods in the store. Meatless chili comes to mind. Something else that gets overlooked in our diet is pinhead or steel oats.
These maintain all of the nutrients from the whole grain oat and are a rich source of soluble fiber, protein, and vitamins, as well as other nutrients like selenium, thiamin, phosphorous, and manganese. These will also lower our cholesterol.
Finally stock up on some cheap, dry pastas, or macaroni and cheese, to make the most of leftovers. Add some broccoli, or leftover meat, and you’ve got a quick and inexpensive dish.
With all the focus on obesity maybe the silver lining in these economic times is to think about portion control. Not making a meal of each food group on the plate has less calories and will promote weight loss as well as stretching the budget for groceries a little further.
Keep in mind that one portion of meat is about the size of a deck of cards, and fill up on dark greens or other less expensive side items like cooked carrots or potatoes.

Whenever you see words like coronary artery and disease, everyone gets all serious and defensive, but actually being diagnosed with CAD does not mean that you can’t live life to the fullest. It is a “wake up“ call though to take charge of your health.
The first thing to do is to learn all you can about the condition. Coronary Artery Disease is a blockage or a narrowing in one or more of the blood vessels that transport oxygen to the heart.
If you are at risk for CAD, take some time to learn which medicines and supplements are used to treat the condition and what options there are to save money purchasing them.
A low dose of aspirin helps keep platelets from sticking together and forming clots. Statins like Lipitor lower the LDL or bad cholesterol which clog the arteries. They also increase the good or HDL cholesterol which keeps the arteries clean by carrying away the excess.
Beta Blockers help lower blood pressure so your heart doesn’t have to work as hard. ACE inhibitors are another form of medication used to lower blood pressure and lessen the chances of heart failure.
If you have medical insurance for your medicine, each plan is different but choosing a generic form of the medication is cheaper than the brand name drug. Ask your Pharmacy if they have a generic medication program. Another way to save may be to order your medicine by mail for 3 months at a time instead of every 30 days.
Even if you don’t have insurance be sure to take good care of yourself. As much as possible, eat a nutritious balanced diet, keep your weight within the BMI normal parameters and get plenty of exercise. There are natural healthy supplements that can assist in weight loss, cholesterol support and essential vitamins.
Find yourself a good doctor and maybe even a cardiologist who knows how to treat CAD. Know what questions to ask them.
Keep your cholesterol under control and know why it is important to do so. Your total cholesterol should be less than 200. The HDL or good cholesterol should be greater than 60 and the LDL or bad cholesterol needs to be less than 100. Triglycerides need to be less than 150. These are made when you consume more calories than you need, and your body stores them as fat.
Understand what tests you need and which ones you don’t. If you are not at risk you don’t need an ECG, or stress test. In fact if you over test you can get false positive results and put more stress on yourself than you need. Get your blood pressure tested regularly. It should be 140/90 or lower. If you have diabetes or kidney problems your blood pressure should be 130/80 or lower.
So to summarize how to keep your heart healthy with or without CAD remember to:
Visit your Doctor
Take your medications and/or supplements
Don’t smoke
Eat good food (fruits & veggies)
Keep moving (exercise)
Manage anger and stress
Watch for signs of depression
If you’re diabetic control your blood sugars
There are literally thousands of sexual stimulants on the market for both men and women. They aren’t all good products. Some of them just don’t work well and others have side effects that you certainly don’t want any part of.
Based on some independent research there here is an example of a natural herb that has been tested successfully to be a first rate lower cost solution to Viagra.
There was a recent study done in Italy on a Chinese herbal remedy that could offer an alternative to men suffering from erectile dysfunction.
The herb known as horny Goat Weed has a reputation as a natural aphrodisiac. The lab experiments were conducted at the University of Milan.
Erectile dysfunction is a common condition worldwide, and drugs like Pfizer Inc’s Viagra, Eli Lilly and Co’s Cialis or tadalafil, and Bayer AG’s Levitra or vardenafil, work by increasing blood flow to the genitals. However the side effects range from headaches, upset stomach and visual problems including blindness.
The Italian team looked for alternatives by studying a number of plants reputed to boost sexual performance.
After deciding to focus on horny goat weed, the researchers modified a compound in the plant called icariin and found it blocked the erection-inhibiting enzyme as well as Viagra did.
Because the compound targets the enzyme more precisely, it may have fewer side effects than Viagra Mario Dell’Agli, a researcher at the University of Milan, who led the study said.
Further tests in animals and humans are needed but the extract from the herb represents a potential new erectile dysfunction treatment with fewer side effects, Dell’Agli said.
“The compound icariin is present in the horny goat weed in large amounts and its activity against (the enzyme) is lower compared to Viagra,” he said. “But the new molecule we synthesized from icariin is as good as Viagra against (the enzyme).”
